Lyme & Other Tickborne Diseases Update

Program Description

Lyme disease, currently the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, is extremely common in Rhode Island (1,200+ cases per year). Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Lyme Disease and other Tickborne diseases including newer Borrelia Miyamotoi and Powassan virus will be the highlight of this program.

Latest statistics on new infections and trends in Rhode Island and southeastern New England as well as health challenges in areas of high tick exposure will be addressed. Our goals are to increase medical providers’ knowledge and ability to effectively prevent, diagnose and treat tickborne diseases and to be knowledgeable about common questions arising in the care of the Tickborne disease patient.
